How to calculate your MDCAT score
- The calculator is pre-set for MDCAT: 200 questions, 1 mark per correct answer, and negative marking set to “None (0)”.
- Enter how many questions you answered correctly.
- Enter how many you answered wrongly. Wrong answers cost you nothing — they simply score zero.
- Your MDCAT score out of 200 and your percentage appear instantly, with your accuracy and the number of questions you left unattempted.
- If you are scoring a practice test that does use negative marking, change the “Negative marking” dropdown to 1/4 or the value your test uses.
How MDCAT scoring works now
The most important fact about MDCAT scoring is the one many preparation books still get wrong: there is no negative marking in MDCAT. The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) removed negative marking in 2022, and it has stayed removed since. Every correct answer earns 1 mark, every wrong answer earns 0, and unattempted questions earn 0. There is no deduction anywhere in the paper.
The paper itself is 200 multiple-choice questions, worth 200 marks in total. Worked example: you answer 150 correctly, 30 wrongly and leave 20 unattempted. Your score is 150 out of 200, which is 75%. Under the old system (1/4 mark deducted per wrong answer) the same paper would have scored 150 − 7.5 = 142.5 — but that system no longer applies, so do not subtract anything. If a book or an academy still tells you to deduct marks for wrong answers in MDCAT, it is using outdated rules.
Your MDCAT score is then combined with your academic marks into the final merit aggregate. The standard weighting is 50% MDCAT, 40% FSc (pre-medical) and 10% Matric — so a strong MDCAT can lift a weaker FSc, and a weak MDCAT is hard to rescue with FSc alone. Always confirm the current year's exact aggregate formula from PMDC, because the weighting is set year by year.
Common uses
The main use is checking your expected score right after the test: count your correct answers from the answer key, enter the numbers here, and you know your score before the official result. Students also use it on practice tests and past papers — solve a full 200-question paper under timed conditions, score it here, and track your progress week by week.
It is equally useful for merit planning: once you know your MDCAT score, you can work out your aggregate with your FSc and Matric marks and compare it with last year's closing merit of the colleges you want. That tells you honestly whether you are in range, or how many more marks you need from the next attempt.
Tips
Because there is no negative marking, never leave a question blank in MDCAT: a guess costs nothing and a correct guess earns a full mark. Even a random guess on a question you know nothing about can only help. That is the opposite of the old advice, and it is the single most valuable change the 2022 rule brought — but it only applies to MDCAT itself, not to ECAT, NUST NET or other tests that still deduct marks.
When you practise, score yourself the MDCAT way (no deduction) and keep a separate record of your accuracy: the percentage of attempted questions you got right. A student who attempts 190 and gets 150 right (79% accuracy) is in a stronger position than one who attempts all 200 and gets 150 right (75% accuracy) — the second student is guessing more and their score is less reliable. Accuracy, not just the total, tells you what to revise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there negative marking in MDCAT?
No. PMDC removed negative marking from MDCAT in 2022, and it has not returned since. A wrong answer scores 0 — nothing is deducted. If a book, academy or website still says MDCAT deducts 1/4 mark per wrong answer, it is outdated.
How many marks is the MDCAT paper?
200 marks: 200 multiple-choice questions, 1 mark each, with no negative marking. The test runs for 3.5 hours. Your score is simply the number of correct answers.
What is a good MDCAT score?
It depends on the year's merit, but as a guide, 180+ out of 200 is competitive for public-sector medical colleges in Punjab, and 170+ is usually needed for a realistic chance. Check the closing merit of your target colleges from last year — that is the number that matters.
How is the final merit aggregate calculated?
The standard weighting is 50% MDCAT, 40% FSc (pre-medical) and 10% Matric. So your aggregate = (MDCAT ÷ 200 × 50) + (FSc ÷ 1100 × 40) + (Matric ÷ 1100 × 10). Confirm the current year's exact formula from PMDC before relying on it.
Can I use this calculator for practice tests?
Yes. Set the total questions to your test's count, enter your correct and wrong answers, and leave negative marking on “None (0)” for MDCAT-style papers. If your practice test does deduct marks, change the dropdown to match its rule.
